Puget Sound Sailing proudly offers an exciting Offshore Preparation class. This is a class
both for the sailor committed to an offshore passage and the sailor who is contemplating
such a trip and wants to get a taste of offshore sailing while gaining valuable training and
experience.

INSTRUCTOR
Michael Rice, veteran of seven Pacific crossings, Coast Guard and ASA Certified
Instructor and owner of Puget Sound Sailing. Mike has sailed over 80,000 nautical miles
and crossed the Pacific seven times. He has been awarded ASA Instructor of the Year an
unprecedented six times (1997, 2000, 2001, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005). He is an ASA
certified instructor through Celestial Navigation and Offshore Passagemaking.

TIME AND LOCATION
May 22 to May 25, 2010. Departing at noon from Victoria, B.C. or Port Townsend, WA,
we will set watches (six hours on - six hours off during the day; four hours on - four
hours off at night). Our course sets us sailing due west out the Straits and into the Pacific
Ocean for several days and then return to our starting point by noon on May 25, 2010.
Typically, the offshore class goes approximately 80-100 miles off the Washington coast!!

CURRICULUM
Steering through ocean waves, GPS, radar, ship traffic avoidance, heavy weather sailing,
special offshore rigging, use of safety harnesses, etc.
